The first “Angela’s House” was named after Angela Policastro who died when she was fourteen months old. Her parents, Robert and Angela, began a campaign after her death to develop a home on Long Island for severely disabled children. The Policastros hoped to spare other families from their ordeal of searching out of state for a place that would take care of their child. The daunting task of home care seemed overwhelming, especially without an agency available to coordinate the services needed to support Angela at home.

This affiliation has forged a new road for the future, using expertise of both agencies to help more families into the future. Caring for medically fragile children can be both emotionally and financially challenging. There are limited resources in our community that we can access for these special children. This creates a need for Angela’s House to seek donations and grants to help our children obtain services and goods, which cannot be funded through other means. Donations help to assist children living at home with their families as well as those living at Angela’s House.

Angela’s House has worked very hard to create new programs and opportunities for medically frail children. The doors of our first home Angela’s House located in East Moriches opened in the fall of 2000 in a culmination of a ten-year effort by Bob Policastro. Named after his daughter, this beautiful home offers a loving environment with 24-hour nursing care.

In 1992, the non for profit Angela’s House was created to offer families and professionals an agency to call to help medically frail children and their families. Angela’s House has helped to simplify home care options for families by coordinating the extensive array of services needed to support medically frail children at home. The new house will include five bedrooms for up to house seven children, a recreational play area, special bathroom facilities, and a nursing station with vital medical equipment. State Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg (D-Long Beach) and Robert Policastro of Smithtown, father of the home’s namesake, broke the ground with theit ceremonial shovels on June 6. The Home Store also helps our environment by reducing the amount of material that goes into local landfills. Local builders, contractors, businesses and individuals are encouraged to donate new or previously owned re-usable materials, as well as inventory that is overstocked or discontinued. Our Home Store provides a green alternative and cost-effective means for disposal of items that would normally be thrown away.

Once funding was secured, with the help of Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, Angela’s House worked in collaboration with IGHL, Independent Group Home Living, to build and operate this home. This collaborative effort became the foundation of an affiliation between two agencies. IGHL is recognized as a leader in providing services for people with developmental disabilities.
